Big eyes- jw's all excited about the movie
by purrpurr infor those still attending.
have you seen an excitement go through the dubs about the tim burton film big eyes?
they reckon it will give a "fine witness".. i've seen it and found it really irritating, basically margaret keane is such a timid mouse that she allows her husband to take all the credit for her work.

Wife and I watched the movie a couple weeks ago and thought it was interesting.
We both concluded that she went right from one controlling relationship into another.

Are Elders experts on the Bible? Are they spirtually qualified men?
by John Aquila inhow many times have elders read their bible in its entirety?
these are the leaders that give counsel to married couples, to teenagers, to single girls and single boys on everything from marriage, education, sex, association, dress, and recreation..
how well do they know their bible?

For the Are the elders experts on the bible question: LOL!
Also, my personal experience. . . .
Well before my apostacy (we're talking over 15 years ago now), before I was appointed an elder, but well on the "elder track," I said to myself: I really want to know everything I can know about the bible so I can give an educated answer to whoever asks a question. I was especially interested in being able to explain "deep things" such as how 1914 was arrived at.
I bought a book dealing with the bible and archaeology. In it, I found a shocking error: that Babylon had sacked Jerusalem in 587 BCE! Further research at the library (and in the Insight book) revealed that ALL historians had been duped in to believing that this event happened in 587, and not 607BCE.
And in the back of my head, a little voice said, Well, if the date really was 587, then it is quite possible everything you believe is false!
So my cult self took that little voice in the back of my head into the woods and shot it.

"Make a list of people you want to meet in the New System!" (New September Watchtower)
by FusionTheism inwatchtower september 2015 study edition, "stand firm in the faith," paragraphs 16 and 17:.
following jesus example, we must read the bible daily, study it, and meditate on what we learn.
along with general bible study, dig into topics about which you may have questions.. you can imitate jesus by meditating on the wonderful promises jehovah has made to you.

Rutherford, Knorr or Franz - Who has the most influence on doctrine & process now?
by konceptual99 inso, i was thinking - who of the above still has the most influence on current wts doctrine and dogma?.
rutherford obviously created the smokescreen around 1914/607 but overall his work has been superseded i would suggest.. knorr created the various schools and they or their offspring still live on.
wasn't it during his tenure that all the blood doctrine, types/anti types (now chucked away of course), transplants etc came along?

In spirit, I find the current period and it's associated rhetoric more Rutherfordian than ever.
I think just about everything Franz ever did was just thrown out the window with the new "no antitypes" approach.

Watchtower Society and Science
by FusionTheism inis the governing body's methods and practices all that much different from the way scientists work?.
some prominent scientists and big media in the 1970's were pushing imminent disaster from global cooling.
now its global warming and they all sweep the global cooling fiasco under the rug and act like it was just one or two rogue individuals.. other examples can be given: scientists being wrong on the eternal universe, black holes, whether eggs or coffee are healthy or harmful, presenting fake fossils, etc.

You're not going to see the difference between how science works and the governing body works if you don't stop looking to People Magazine for answers. -

Why did the org "forgive" KH mortgages?
by Magnum ini know this has been discussed, but i think it's good that topics like this get brought back up from time to time for the sake of newbies and lurkers, plus, i have a question (related at end of post).. the org brags about "forgiving" kh mortgages as if it's so loving and giving.
i put the word in quotation marks because most of us realize it wasn't forgiving anything.
the new arrangement should actually bring it far more money.. for example, suppose there are twenty congregations total.

I agree with FREEMINDFADE. Something's up either regarding taxes or the U.S. govt. Personally I think it's the govt.
I was a grand juror on a case regarding a religious institution who was running its "charity" like a bank: they loaned money, charged interest. . . the whole bit.
We indicted basically because if it walks like a bank, talks like a bank. . . . ITS A BANK! and must be accountable to the government.
After hearing the case, I wondered to myself, What's the difference between what this institution did and what the society does, other than the society does it on a far larger scale!
